How well is your diet?

How much do you know about the USDA food Pyramid?  There are five food groups, and every day we are supposed to eat something from each group.  The five groups are Grains, Vegetables, Fruit, Dairy, and Protein Foods.  Following are the five groups and just a couple of the suggested foods for each.

Grains- Make half your grains whole.

Whole Grains- whole-wheat flour, oatmeal, brown rice

Refined Grains- cornbread, grits, pasta

Vegetables- Vary your veggies

Dark green vegetables- bok choy, romaine lettuce, turnip greens

Orange vegetables- butternut squash, carrots, pumpkin

Dry beans and peas- kidney beans, soy beans, black eyed peas

Starchy vegetables- corn, green peas, potatoes

Other vegetables- Artichokes, cabbage, onions

Fruit Focus on fruits

Berries

Mangoes

Melons

100% Fruit juice

Dairy- Get your calcium-rich foods

Yogurt

Milk-based desserts– puddings and frozen yogurt

Cheese- parmesan, ricotta, american

Protein Foods- Go lean with protein

Meats- beef, pork, liver

Poultry- chicken, duck, turkey

Dry beans and peas- lentils, tofu, garden burgers

Nuts & seeds- hazelnuts, peanut butter, sunflower seeds

Fish- salmon, shrimp, clams
