Phenomenal Woman….

9 Feb

African-American Supermodels are few and far between. Ebony magazine featured a very detailed article about the absence of African-American models on the runway, in editorials and advertisement in their September 2008 issue. It really makes you salute the Models that have remained in the business thus far. Liya Kebede is one of those models who has remained relevant in the world of fashion. Even at the tender age of 32 which is young by society standards however “old” by the fashion world standards she still remains a force to be reckoned with. Born January 3, 1978 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Liya was discovered by a Film Director while she was a student attending Lycee Guebre Mariam. That Film Director would later introduce her to a French Modeling agency and thus the rest is history.

Liya’s rise to stardom came when Tom Ford asked her for an exclusive contract for his Gucci Fall/Winter 2000 show. Liya has graced the covers of Vogue, Flair and V magazine. Liya has also been fortunate enough to be featured on many designer campaigns. In July 2007 Liya was named the 11th  top earing Supermodel making 2.5 million in the past 12 months.

Liya is not only beautiful but she is smart, business minded and an advocate. Liya founded the Liya Kebede Foundation whose mission is to reduce  child and maternal mortality in Ethiopia and around the world. Liya also was named the WHO Goodwill Ambassador for Maternal, Newborn and Child Health. Liya founded Lemlem which is a clothing  line that helps to preserve the art of traditional weaving in Ethiopia and to offer work opportunities to local artisans.

Liya Kebede is a phenomenal women who has not forgotten where she came from. This month is all about paying homage to those who have blazed the path for each one of us to walk through. For that we salute Liya Kebede for being a trail blazer…. Simply Regal…..
